Avoid Skipping Recovery
Listening to your body is key to avoiding injury and burnout. Your body can actually grow stronger when you are at rest. The process of training includes workouts that are strategically placed along with rest days, which provides stimulation during the activity and recovery when you are at rest. If you are new to running, it is important not to push yourself to hard. Injuries can pop up when training advances too quickly. If your body is giving you warning signs, listen and take the extra time off so you can fully adjust and recover to meet your specific fitness needs.
The South Mountain Classic is your choice of a 20k or 5k starting and beginning at the South Mountain Activity Center in Phoenix. Take Central Avenue two miles south of Baseline Road to the park.
Cost for the 20K is $47 for non-members, $37 for ARR members. Cost for the 5K is $26 for non-members and $16 for ARR members. Your ARR member discount will show on your total during checkout.
Registration begins at 5:30 a.m. The 20K begins at 6:30 a.m. and the 5K begins at 7:00 a.m. Please plan to arrive early! Park Rangers will be checking each vehicle before entering the park. This can cause a backup in traffic, especially nearing gun time.
South Mountain Park requires all runners to be off the road by 10:00 a.m. Thus runners in the 20K must be able to maintain at least a 17 minute-per-mile pace. If you cannot maintain this pace for the 20K race, please choose a shorter distance.
Both the 20K and 5K are USATF certified courses. The courses are on roads only (no trails).
Runners can pick up their bibs on race day starting at 5:30 a.m.
