Tip Of The Day

Build a Foundation

Add some variety to your exercise routine. Run one day and strength train the next. This will not only hold your interest in the workouts longer, but it will give your body the time it needs for recovery. Additionally, you are covering more muscle groups throughout the body and keeping the workouts motivating and different.

To build up endurance for your 5K race include some interval training as part of your regimen. Use hill sessions and up-tempo to your runs to do this. Hold a steady running pace where you do not feel like you are just about to die, but that you can keep going.

Head to the track for shorter interval runs while learning to pace yourself. Learn to conserve your energy during the first part of the race and then to let go in the second half so you can make it to the finish line of you 5K race.

12th Annual Candy Cane 5K benefiting Boys Town Central Florida

Get out those reindeer antlers and Santa suits for the 12th Annual Candy Cane 5K on Saturday, December 8th, 2018! The event is being put on by Boys Town Central Florida, and will begin at Central Winds Park. All proceeds will benefit Boys Town Central Florida. Boys Town Central Florida is a local 501c3 nonprofit that serves at-risk boys, girls, and their families, in Seminole, Orange and Osceola Counties. We have several programs to support many different levels of need for families. These include preventative programs like Parenting classes, an Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic and In-Home Family Services. We also have a short term Intervention & Assessment Center on our campus in Oviedo, for children 10-18 who need a short respite from their current living situations, and four Family Homes for long term residential youth. The Candy Cane 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and yes, Santa will be there to greet runners as they run, jog or walk across the finish line. Following the 5K will be a free Kids Fun Run. The first 700 finishers will receive a medal and everyone will receive a t-shirt. There will also be awards presented after the race for different categories. Local vendors will be present and food will be available, as well as, of course, hot chocolate.
