Build a Foundation

Add some variety to your exercise routine. Run one day and strength train the next. This will not only hold your interest in the workouts longer, but it will give your body the time it needs for recovery. Additionally, you are covering more muscle groups throughout the body and keeping the workouts motivating and different.

To build up endurance for your 5K race include some interval training as part of your regimen. Use hill sessions and up-tempo to your runs to do this. Hold a steady running pace where you do not feel like you are just about to die, but that you can keep going.

Head to the track for shorter interval runs while learning to pace yourself. Learn to conserve your energy during the first part of the race and then to let go in the second half so you can make it to the finish line of you 5K race.

The Pistol Ultra

An urban ultra to start spring off with a bang! This event near Knoxville, TN, has quickly become very popular, always filling before registration closes. With distances from 13.1 to 150 miles, there's something for everyone! The course is a mostly flat (for East Tennessee!), paved, generally eight foot wide greenway that is lit at night time. For those who prefer a softer surface, there is grass alongside some of the trail. It meanders along the Pistol Creek (hence the name for the event), through Alcoa, by several small bodies of water, and over to Maryville's Bicentennial Greenbelt Park. It is a linear route just over 5 miles long with a lollipop at the end of the out-and-back. All of the races start at the beautiful new Alcoa High School (1205 Lodge Street, Alcoa, TN). All distances will run south about 4.5 miles and return to the start, then continue north to their specified turnaround and return back to the start. The 50K/100K loops will be the same distance (10.35 miles). The 50kers will do this loop three times; the 100kers, six times. The 50/100 mile loops will be slightly shorter (10 miles exactly), with the 10 milers doing it once, the 50 milers five times, and the hundo runners ten times. The event features a very generous 32 hour cut-off for the 50K, 100K, and hundo. The nighttime 50 mile race starts at 8 PM Saturday with a 20 hour cut-off. The half marathon starts at 7:55 AM Sunday (March 22); the full marathon starts at 8 AM Sunday (course details coming soon for these two distances!). All races end at 4 PM Sunday.
