Build a Foundation
Add some variety to your exercise routine. Run one day and strength train the next. This will not only hold your interest in the workouts longer, but it will give your body the time it needs for recovery. Additionally, you are covering more muscle groups throughout the body and keeping the workouts motivating and different.
To build up endurance for your 5K race include some interval training as part of your regimen. Use hill sessions and up-tempo to your runs to do this. Hold a steady running pace where you do not feel like you are just about to die, but that you can keep going.
Head to the track for shorter interval runs while learning to pace yourself. Learn to conserve your energy during the first part of the race and then to let go in the second half so you can make it to the finish line of you 5K race.
Join us for our 5th Annual Ft. De Soto Distance Classic, featuring 15K, 10K and 5K races and scheduled for Sunday, September 29, 2019 at 7:05 a.m., at our nation's favorite beach: Fort De Soto Park, just south of St. Petersburg.
This is the only 15K Race scheduled in Pinellas County for the 2019-20 season.
Fort De Soto Park has been named "America’s Top Beach" by TripAdvisory several times over the years. Citing a “spectacular combination of soft white sand, calm, clear water and a laid-back atmosphere,” the popular online travel network put the park’s North Beach at the top of its annual best-of list, based on TripAdvisor's Popularity Index.
This pristine Pinellas County beach has also received top honors on an annual “best-of” list. In 2005, Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, a.k.a. “Dr. Beach,” named Fort De Soto the nation’s #1 Beach.
ALL races start at North Beach and are pure out-and-back 15K, 10K, and 5K tours of Ft. De Soto Park.
All courses are located entirely in Ft. De Soto Park and run on paved trails and access roads. You will NOT be running on the sand. These are extremely flat and fast courses with no bridges, overpasses, or discernible inclines. They are accurately measured and will be certified by the USATF.
All finishers earn unique, Starfish medals. Awards are up for grabs in all three races for M/F Open, Masters (40+) and Grand Masters (50+), three deep; age group awards offered three deep in 5 year increments.
Six aid stations for the 15K, two for the 10K, and one for the 5K, await you with enthusiastic volunteers, water and Gatorade, and fresh Florida oranges starting at the midpoint of the 15K.
Our area's weather in late September: average low is 62, average high is 82. Of course, the mild temperatures will be welcome while relaxing on our nation's #1 Beach after the race.
Walkers are welcome to join these races. Course support is based on a 17 minute pace. Due to our staging of this race entirely within a park and primarily on nature trails, we will NOT be offering an early walker's start. All athletes will start at the same time in their respective races.
